Red dot sights for handguns are becoming widely accepted and are one of the most popular topics in the industry.

Experts once described them as a play toy that was never used on the road or on duty, but those days are over. All this is considered mandatory on rifles today, but it is far from the "rule of iron sights".

Irons are great, you should learn and practice with them, but denying yourself better aim and the ability to hit a hazard or target is a bit ridiculous.
As Mini Red Dot sights become smaller, stronger and easier to aim, shooters are beginning to recognize the benefits. As with rifles, it is easier to aim and hit in many situations. Optic-ready handguns are becoming the rule, not the exception, with new models hitting the market regularly.
In more than 40 years of shooting, I have dropped front and rear sights, dots have fallen off, and every imaginable surface of the gun has failed, from the exquisite plastics to the machined artwork.
It's mechanical, failure is inevitable, and invincibility is a marketing gimmick, not reality. Red dot sights are no exception, and just like their rifle predecessors, they failed to launch and have been greatly improved.

But being close, and there are places to meet most needs. Not everyone needs an RDS that can be dropped from a helicopter, driven by a tank, and then submerged to 33 feet for an hour without losing zero.
Some do, or at least think so. Don't be fooled into thinking that your equipment is unusable until you hit it with a sledgehammer and continue to transport.
It's pretty simple, accuracy and speed at close range depends on position, natural point of aim, stability and good trigger pull. It's not a front point, a blade, or a glow stick. Within seven yards the difference would be negligible, maybe even 10 yards.
The sharpest shooters on the planet use red dot sights, which have been around for years, but very few have done so to quickly hit an ISPC target at 10 yards. Many people are sharper with them than us mere mortals without sight.

Using RDS is the norm for me for fist sized groups on six inch steel at 50 yards. At 25 yards from the support position they cluster together. Even at 25 yards it's not hard to stay within range.
Even hitting a silhouette at 100 yards is possible without too much difficulty. If you can keep the point reasonably steady, you can have success, and with RDS it's easier to do than it seems, especially as you get older.
And this is another advantage. The older you get, the harder it is for most to focus or even see that front sight. Catching that red dot is much easier. Add movement and it's even better.
Put the dot on the target and press, no need to "align" the rear sight. Using solid fundamentals, recoil and barrel control, and proper training, you'll repeat more accurate, faster, and better shots using the dot in almost any situation.

If you're an experienced shooter, do what you've always done, build and maintain a solid foundation. Aim the gun as you always do and the crosshairs will appear - usually before the crosshairs.
Don't chase it, just watch it, don't change your stance, grip or anything else, it's a sight that no amount of magic and basics will beat. Many new shooters find it even easier because the sight is easier to see, just like on a rifle.
Focus on the dot, just like your front sight, no need to align the rear, if the dot is on the sight and you are. Place the dot on the target and squeeze with a smooth, flat trigger pull, disturbing the dot as little as possible.
There are a few proven examples, or at least mostly proven ones, if you think your appearance should go unpunished. Trijicon's Type 2 RMR is the top dog in this hunt.
Glock Red Dot Mount
Designed to take as much punishment as the MRDS can handle, it's as rugged as it gets, proven through testing and military use.
Both the Delta Point Pro and Trijicon's RMR/SRS have earned military contracts making them solid and proven choices. Given time, testing and increasing demand, these surveys will grow.
Carry sights must be sturdy and withstand daily use, but they can be smaller and easier to conceal and mount on smaller guns.
Shield Sights makes several, including the RMS-C (Compact), which is the most popular. Their new RMS-W is waterproof and uses a tempered glass screen.
Best Optic Setup I've Used So Far!
The latest Romeo Zero from Sig Sauer Electro Optics is a perfect example of a compact scope designed around their Sig P365 XL pistol.
With new places hitting the market almost every month, there are plenty of choices that are perfect for most. While Vertex has offered several slots over the years, Crimson Trace has jumped into this market with a vengeance.
Holoson has really started to catch on and offers a full line of quality scopes. If it's really just for fun or a bonfire, many less expensive imports are fine and just plain fun.
It really comes down to what you're going to do with the gun you're using, spending more on a scope than a gun doesn't make everything better.

One of the more difficult and frankly annoying issues with pistol RDS is mounting them to your gun.
The two most common handguard mounting patterns for small pistols are the Trijicon RMR and the Leupold Delta Point Pro.
Sig Sauer's P320 fits their Romeo 1 Pro, will work with the Delta Point Pro, but isn't really designed for it.
Everyone seems to put their locking pin in a different place. Many factory guns will offer plates that will fit into their slide allowing you to use several of them.
Do You Need A Red Dot Sight On Your Carry Pistol?
FN America's 509 is a great example as is Glock's MOS line. Others have slides cut to match the pattern - the Sig P365 XL and the new Springfield Armory Hellcat are good examples. Both shields use the RMSc pattern, which is perfect for their size.
It may seem like something that can be offered to a universal factory, but custom CNC machining is available for almost anything. Ultimately, the fit in the front and rear of the RDS kit is less noticeable.
My personal preference and recommendation is that carry or work pistols have iron sights that can be aimed from the side if possible. Whether the back is in front of the RDS or behind it is personal preference or dictated by space on the slide.
Many newer RDSs have built-in rear sights that fit forward and that's fine, especially with smaller pistols. It's not acceptable (to me) to have a carry gun without a sighting mechanism on iron sights, that's for sure.

Red dots break, all of them, and you need places in the fight. While these new RDS aren't "perfect", they're nice to have and not necessarily a requirement.
Rarely seen on RDS-equipped competition shooters' pistols. Given their timing on the trigger, they practice crawling through the screen. Also, one's life does not depend on what they do in the match.
Just like a rifle, it eliminates all distractions and is incredibly sharp with practice. The same can happen with a shooting pistol - one that is never carried. Some people will practice on ranges or game guns without iron sights and carry the same type of gun with iron sights.
It makes it easy to engage on point while providing a basic combat system.
Red Dot Sight Guide: Best Optics For Pistols (and How To Use Them)
But red dot guns keep getting better with no end to their capabilities. There is no magic wand that will make you faster, but for many people it offers a serious improvement.
Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, depending on what it's designed for. As they become smaller, more robust and better proven, they will only grow in use. Be sure to get some training, don't just shoot a magazine and call it good.
If you're going to use it in combat, go ahead and use something proven in combat.
Above all, practice, because RDS helps you aim, not shoot — and it only gets better with practice.
